Open consultation for visiting in care homes, hospitals and hospices
03/07/2023
Visiting loved ones in care homes, hospitals, and hospices is crucial for their well-being and quality of care. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated concerns about visiting restrictions, and while necessary for safety, they caused emotional distress. Guidelines now emphasise the importance of encouraging and facilitating visiting in all circumstances. Despite efforts to return to normal, some restrictions have persisted, leading to prolonged separation and emotional harm.
The Department of Health and Social care is now undertaking an open consulation. This consultation seeks feedback on introducing legislation to ensure reasonable access to visitors in care homes, hospitals, and hospices, including accompanying individuals to appointments. It urges participation to gather evidence for determining necessary actions on visiting in health and care settings.
